Upcoming: August In-Person Meeting
For July's monthly meeting month we resumed meeting in-person thanks to our generous host for the event who opened up their Pasadena home for the meeting. We even had a spontaneously organized potluck. We will continue the in-person meeting in August, so keep an eye out for the next August meeting date!!

Join upcoming local advocacy actions

1. Proposed advocacy to get Pasadena City Council to take action on ICE
The proposed advocacy would be seeking an ordinance or policy banning ICE use of masks, requiring local police and sheriffs to verify those participating in raids are actual ICE or federal law enforcement agents. One of our members shared a community resolution pending before the Alhambra City Council that would require police to verify the identity of those participating in ostensible ICE raids. Proposed advocacy to get Pasadena City Council to adopt a similar directive.

2. Send community letter to the Pasadena City Council regarding Flock
Proposed advocacy to gather names on a letter to send to the Pasadena City Council regarding Flock. Please read this related blog post on Flock Safety automated license plate reader data security. South Pasadena is now reviewing its contract due to advocacy efforts.

CALL Monday to vote No on SB 540 Pathways Grid Bill

Assembly Energy will be voting July 16 Wed. on SB 540, the bill that would give up control over California energy to Western fossil fuel dependent states – based on false promises of clean affordable reliable energy – which it cannot deliver. We need calls on Monday, especially to Speaker Rivas to ensure it is also referred to the Assembly Judiciary Committee.
Linked below are our two letters from Indivisible California with 73 organizations and the Coalition letter of 57 organizations – totaling 130 organizations opposing SB 540 – to see all the details of why it’s so dangerous.
Everyone should first call Speaker Rivas at (916) 319-2029 to request SB 540 is also referred to the Assembly Judiciary Committee. (Everyone can call him because he is the Speaker).

Script:

My name is … I am with … (organization, if relevant) opposed to SB 540.
I am asking Speaker Rivas to stop this bill, but if not, to ensure that it is referred to the Assembly Judiciary Committee for a hearing on why this bill is so dangerous. It will hand Trump the keys to decimate California's clean energy future.

Then call Energy Chair Petrie-Norris (916) 319-2073 (every one can call her because she is the chair) and then please call your own Assemblymember (list below). Calls make ALL the difference.

Script:

My name is … my zip code is … I am with … (organization, if relevant) opposed to SB 540.
I am asking my Assemblymember to stop SB 540 the Pathways grid regionalization bill
Don't hand Trump the keys to decimate California's clean energy future.
If you have to pass it, ensure the amendments Indivisible and others have sent to you are included to protect all Californians. Don’t let us be at the mercy of out-of-state coal interests. Protect us from Trump!

Background

Under pressure from McGuire, all but Senator Wahab and two Republicans voted in the Senate to pass it – even though many senators brought up grave concerns. The Senate Judiciary Committee said: Under this bill, California would open the state up to federal challenges.”  California could see significant harm to its energy goals and its standing in the regional market… These dangers are even greater now that President Trump has put a target on California’s green energy laws.
