Pasadena Community Defense Corners & Reporting ICE sightings

In case you missed it, the East Pasadena Community Defense Corner (CDC) was recently featured in a New York Times article titled "They Saw Their Neighbors Taken Away by ICE. Then They Made a Plan".

A link to an unpaywalled printable version of the full article is below (thanks to a CDC community member for sharing this).

On Friday 8/15, ICE raided the Pasadena Home Depot for the first time since the CDC was set-up. As of our information today, it appears at least one day laborer was taken and as many as 3 were also taken from the nearby Sierra Madre Villa metro station. On Thursday 8/14, day laborer Roberto Carlos Montoya was killed on during an ICE raid at the Monrovia Home Depot. NDLON have shared a fundraiser for his family here:

Follow the NDLON website and social media for updates and any fundraising efforts for the families of impacted immigrant workers.

Reporting ICE Sightings in Alta/Pasadena

Grupo Auto Defensa Dena is a community group responding to ICE sightings in the Pasadena and Altadena area. They rapidly responded to the ICE raid at the Home Depot on Friday 8/15. Please save their number (626-876-7600) in your phone and use it to report any ICE sightings. There is a link below to print out flyers (4 per sheet) to share with your neighbors.

Volunteer at a CDC

The East Pasadena Community Defense Corner (CDC) is requesting volunteers to contact the group at eastpasadenacdc@proton.me.
There is also a CDC in Altadena that could use more volunteers and support. Please email indivisible.alta.pasadena@gmail.com and we will connect you with the Altadena Rising CDC organizers.

Redistricting Updates From Indivisible CASS Democracy Reform Group

Much of the information below is provided by members of CASS Democracy Work Group. The Democracy Reform workgroup is meeting on its regularly scheduled time, Tuesday, August 19 @ 5:30 pm.  Anyone who is interested in the Redistricting efforts can join at the zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/81371719717

Background

Donald Trump is pressuring states to rig congressional maps to create permanent Republican control of the House.

In any other year, that would sound hyperbolic, but Texas legislators have already had to flee the state in a last ditch effort to prevent the historic disenfranchisement of voters. This is not normal, and we cannot treat it as such. Texas is a test case and just the beginning.

Indivisible CA State Strong (CASS) voted to support Gov Newsom's plan to redistrict. CASS' effort is being led by Democracy Reform workgroup.
The path is through the legislature and then onto November 2025 ballot (special election). Deadline for the measure to get on the ballot is next Friday, August 22 to pass and Gov. Newsom to sign.

Goals

  • Between now and Aug 22 - encourage and support state legislators
  • Between now and voting period (~ October 4 thru November 4) -
Gather and share messaging, find get out the vote (GOTV) actions and work them

Identify positions of state legislators by By 5 pm Sunday, August 17

Here is a doc that lists the state electeds that includes a column of folks who have/will reach out.

Then fill in the row for that elected.

Sample script:

3. If your elected is a Republican, please call to express your support
Sample script:
Hi, I’m ___________________ from zip code _____, one of your constituents.  I support Gov Newsom’s plan to redistrict CA.  Please reach out to your TX colleagues and ask them to drop their plan for mid-cycle redistricting.  Thank youFYI - we are communicating our redistricting efforts in this channel to efficiently share.
